Bicyclists suspected in burglary
Doorknobs, wiring, tools found in duffel.
Two Harrisburg men were arrested yesterday after an off-duty Columbia police officer interrupted the burglary of an unoccupied home in rural Boone County.
Hardy | Sifuentes |
William R. Hardy, 33, and Mark Sifuentes, 44, both of 12298 N. Route J, were arrested on suspicion of second-degree burglary, first-degree trespassing, second-degree property damage and stealing. Hardy also was arrested on an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court on a separate stealing charge.
At about 4 p.m., sheriff’s Maj. Tom Reddin said, the off-duty officer was driving home and stopped in the 7000 block of Sweringen Road to speak with a man who lives in the area. Reddin said the officer and the man, who owns the house that was burglarized, saw two men leave the residence and ride away on bicycles.
The suspects ignored a statement from the homeowner, prompting the officer to search the surrounding area, Reddin said.
The officer caught up with the men along nearby Trimble Road, Reddin said. Deputies were sent to the area and arrested Hardy and Sifuentes at about 4:30 p.m.
Reddin said the suspects broke into a garage and the locked home. They allegedly packed copper wiring, tools, brass doorknobs, a pair of Carhartt overalls and a plastic bag full of change into a duffel bag that they left outside the house, Reddin said.
"It was a pretty quick deal," Reddin said, adding that conversation between the officer and homeowner probably interrupted the burglary.
Both men remained in custody today at the Boone County Jail. Bond was set at $10,500 for Hardy and $6,000 for Sifuentes. Hardy last month was charged in Boone County with misdemeanor stealing, according to court records.

Dammit! the secret is out.
Nice links on the side, especially the "not really married" link. You're about the only one who has that right. :)
