The Tour de Tick put on by Gary Lowden provided 6 miles of twisty Ozark single track carving between black jack oaks and an occasional dogwood at the Department of Conservation Bicentennial Park. A few obstacles were tossed in for fun and a berm or two that were perfect for railing. Gary puts on the race to promote cycling, get kids involved and raise money to support a core group of 12 people that help maintain the trails due to state cutbacks. The atmosphere was relaxed with plenty of free meat logs, fruit, drinks, and two kegs.
I caught up with Garrett Steinmetz, who raced the expert open on his single speed. His 15g cranks by The Hive were his most valuable piece of equipment because they were "light and stiff as s**t" and enabled him to "own those bitches on the hole shot." But he "had to put duct tape on them to make them ghetto."
"I was running good but like a 45-year old obese man having sex, for 5 minutes," he said.
HV: How did you finish Garrett?
GS: 5th loser or something. I have not seen the result but I beat Shottler on a single speed.
