Two cross races under my belt this year and then came the State Race. I lined up (on the back row, because I did not preregister) of the CAT. 4's. Trying to weave through
people was exciting but stressful. Then my worst
fear came true. Two guys in front of me sacked it going through the sand pit. Carrying speed, I had no choice but to join in the
fun. I did not get hurt, and luckily no one else did. Back to the end of the CAT 4 choo-choo train. Working through this short of a race, I never saw the leaders and never would have got close with a front row start and the race of my life. I lost the sprint for third, and heard the announcer say "Green Beans is one of the best sprinters-- I cannot believe he lost." What? I may have won a sprint on a training ride against a
drunk one-legged unicycle rider. But thanks for the confidence.
I made a sour cream coffee cake for the trip and post-race snack. This cake was not my best effort but edible. However, it was given away (karma??) to the eventual winner of the CAT. 1's. Now this cake did not carry me to the next level because I neglected a
key training component, but it did fuel this
winner. So I am taking orders for next year's race. It might just help you achieve your
wildest dreams.
Once home, we rolled to my crazy fun family Thanksmas potluck and white elephant gift exchange. We went home with a nice jug of HEED despite my efforts to get
novelty jugs and a 1962 microfilm of
"How to make a baby."
The party continued later in the week with Baby USA's birthday, and a training tip from you know
who: "Your problem is you need to eat hot wings at least once a week." Thanks for the tip. A steady diet of coffee cake and hot wings has been working great this week for my big day of cheering at Nationals.
